Snapp secret... I've done horrible things in my life, and God has shown me mercy. My life in my twenties and early thirties was a mess. I was not a person any parent, uncle, friend, teacher, would be proud of. I did things that to this day I am overcome with shame regarding. But still God showed me mercy and changed my heart and mind in a way that made me change my entire life to serve Him. Today I'm not going to talk about my past though. Instead I'm going to talk about God's mercy and the miracles that happen because of that mercy.
I believe the story of Jesus and Paul is one of the most important lessons in history. For those unfamiliar with the story let me give you the cliff notes version. When you read the Bible and are introduced to Paul you quickly realize Paul is an evil person. Paul persecuted early Christian's and was present for the death of Christian's. Paul hated Christian's to his core.
Well one day Paul was walking on the road and all of a sudden BANG out of nowhere a bright light blinded him and he was in the presence of Christ. In this moment Christ could have punished Paul for his horrible ways. But instead Christ showed mercy to Paul. This one merciful act turned Paul into one of the greatest moral teachers in history. He wrote many books in the Bible and lead countless people to belief in Christ.
This one merciful act Christ did, of changing Paul's heart instead of striking him dead, lead to countless miracles that are still happening to this day. This one merciful act is the reason western society has Christian morals. This one act of kindness changed the entire course of human history.
Humans have a hard time being merciful. People that are against the death penalty catch even themselves cheering for the death of a political foe. I catch myself desiring the death of evil doers. There is this very human character flaw that we all seem to share of being unmerciful. But thankfully God is above our character flaws and he shows mercy when we are not capable of it ourselves.
I think of how different the world would be if we humans showed the mercy to each other that God shows to each of us. Would there be murderers that would become prominent ministers and missionaries? Would families mend that had been broken by words?
I thank God every day for the mercy he showed me in my life. Mercy I never deserved. As we move forward I also pray that as a society we collectively remember the lesson of Paul, and begin to be merciful ourselves.
May the Lord show you mercy,
Lindsay Snapp
